She thought there might be a market for something that was easier to use, but she didn’t think she had the business skills to make something big.
Two years after Perkins took her first digital media class, she and her boyfriend, Cliff Obrecht, decided to make graphic design software that was easy to use and would let schools and students make their own yearbooks. It was called Fusion Books, and their first customer was a French school in Sydney.
In their first year of business, they sold to 15 schools. In their second year, they sold to 30 schools, and in their third year, they sold to 80 schools.
The company was run out of the living room of Perkins’ mom, where the physical yearbooks were printed.
In five years, Fusion Books grew to become the biggest platform of its kind in Australia. It even spread to New Zealand and France. Perkins built the business by himself, but they were running out of money to grow.
Perkins saw it as the first step toward her “crazy, big dream” of a one-stop-shop design site, so she started looking for investors.
A few years later, in 2010, Perkins met Bill Tai, an investor from Silicon Valley, by chance at a conference in Perth. Tai invited Perkins to San Francisco to pitch her idea. This was Perkins’ first big break. The famous venture capitalist saw how impressed she was and put her in touch with people he knew. She wanted to get help from venture capitalists, but no one agreed with the idea or thought it would work.
Perkins was turned down more than 100 times when she tried to get money for Canva.
Before long, the young couple was able to get big investors on board and was building Canva’s design platform with a team of tech engineers that was growing quickly.
But the business really got started in 2012. Lars Rasmussen, who helped start Google Maps and was their tech advisor, helped Perkins and Obrecht find Cameron Adams as a tech co-founder and Dave Hearnden as a tech developer.
After a few months, when the first round of funding was over, the company had too many people interested in it. The Australian government matched the initial $1.5 million investment to keep the company in Australia.

In 2019, the company raised the minimum wage for all of its California workers to $15 an hour, three years before the state required it. In 2006, Resnick started a program called “Wonderful Giving,” which let employees give money to local charities. Wasco Union High School has gotten more than $210,000 from Wonderful Giving over the past twelve years. This is the most money that a local group has gotten from the program. The program has given $141,000 to Lost Hills Elementary School, which is in second place.
